There seems to be an increasing amount of artists playing with perspective and optical illusion installations. This one is quite interesting to look at even though it is formally quite minimalist. For the past few days the weather in Hong Kong has been rather unpredictable and on Thursday it was wild. There was a grade 8 Typhoon warning so my cousins didn't go to school (10 is the highest). We say goodbye to another wonderful painter. I remember taking my painter boyfriend to the Art Gallery of WA and we came across Lucian Freud's Naked Man With Rat quite by accident. John Currin's work is odd, beautiful, unsettling and kitsch. If you know your art history you'll enjoy his quotations of history paintings, particularly from the Renaissance. It's like a wink to the art literate. While they can be enjoyed on all levels, his work creates an interesting dialogue about the history of painting. Dress Up has beautifully tailored clothing in subtle colours and combinations. There was a quote on the website from a magazine feature that described Dress Up as clothing for 'the girl who thinks'. Gregory Crewdson creates amazing images that have a real sense of narrative and emotion that I often associate with cinema. It's like the stills version of Spielberg or Cameron. What do you think?
